Our family has never had an insane amount of extra money in our budget for extras. This includes elaborate home improvements and decorating. So when we recently bought our home it was a dream come true to even be able to do that. I knew immediately that I would have to get creative with what I already had.
We have been in our house for 6 month and I sometimes still feel a little overwhelmed with what I feel needs done still. But there is also a rational voice in my head that tells me “It will be ok, just take it one step at the time.”
I have read lots of other blogs about budget decorating and how people have made something from barely anything, but I often wonder what they mean when they say “I really had no money to decorate with.” What does that Really mean? Did they not have a single dollar to devote to decor or did they just not have a whole lot. Because to me $200 every now and then is more than $0 for a decorating budget. So, I can assure you, when I say: “my decor budget is $0,” that’s what I mean. It is zero. None. Everything coming in is spoken for somewhere else first and will be for some time.
This means that I really have had to get creative and look at the things we already have and determine if anything will work in my new home. So instead of feeling overwhelmed with things, I have chosen to take a more practical approach to things and take one corner of the house at the time and chronicle the transformation in my blog. I am actually really excited about that. Hopefully, I will be able to give you some ideas as to how you can transform your home from a bland, blank canvas to an inviting and cozy home.
The very first cute item that we received as a gift from my father in law and his wife and which is now gracing our front porch is this cute home sign. Can I say that we are partial to the Oklahoma Sooners 🙂
For a very long time I wrote a blog. I had this wild idea after we purchased our first home that I would share the journey of how I decorated and transformed new our home. So, I wrote about small DIY projects that I did in the house; I was fascinated with goal-setting, so I wrote about that. I wrote about experiences I had with my family, books I liked, articles I read, things I loved to bake and cook. Then the writing started to dwindle. Until I finally gave up. I tried to revive it so many times. I compared by blog to other blogs and got embarrassed. What was I thinking? Why even do this? All these other blogs look so professional and put together, and cute and pink and all that.
Fast forward 11 years. I still have the same dream today. I want to write that blog about decorating my house and baking and cooking, goal-setting and victories and failures, about crafting with my kid and books and all that. I still want to share bits and pieces of my story.
… The things I love to do and dream about…
The old house is sold and after 7 years of renting from family, we finally decided to purchase our own home. It’s been a long time coming. It’s really a dream come true. But here I am, about 6 month into this new house journey and I still have a pretty plain canvas of a house. My daughter has done a ton of decorating in her room, but the rest of the house is still pretty plain. I have had no idea where to start. I feel overwhelmed looking at the bare walls and the spaces that still need some love, mostly because I can’t make a decision of what to do.
But then I had an idea. I thought about my old blog and how I loved writing and sharing my journey. I am going to do it. One bite at the time. We are one of those families that don’t have a ton of overflow cash to spend on fancy decor. So, here I am, venturing out on this new journey and I am excited. I don’t know that much about decorating, but I know what I like and I am so excited to share my heart with you. I don’t know that much about blogging either, but I will learn as I go.
My hope is to share a little bit of my story; create a space where people like me, who are seemingly imperfect, can find inspiration in my experiences, my stories, my trials and errors. There are so many ideas out there and I have watched and read and researched. So, grab a cup of coffee, cuddle up with a blanket and come with me as I cozy up my new home.
